The Short Answer — Never Use an Automatic Car Wash
This is the most important thing to know about washing a wrapped car. Automatic car washes use rotating brush rollers or high-pressure water jets — sometimes both — that are designed for bare painted metal. Vehicle wrap vinyl is a different material with different requirements.
Brush rollers create friction across the vinyl surface. The edges of a vehicle wrap — where the vinyl meets the painted surface or wraps around body panel edges — are vulnerable to this friction. Rollers catch the edge, apply force in the wrong direction, and lift the vinyl. Once an edge starts lifting, moisture and dirt get underneath, and the delamination accelerates.
High-pressure jets — particularly at the edges and panel joins — force water underneath the vinyl at pressures it was not designed to withstand. The adhesive releases progressively from the point of water entry, and a bubble or lift develops that cannot be reversed without reapplication.
Beyond the mechanical damage, the chemical cleaners used in automatic car washes are formulated for paint. Many contain solvents, waxes, or detergents that degrade the vinyl's surface coating, dull the colour, and accelerate UV damage. None of this is recoverable.
How to Wash a Wrapped Car Correctly in South Africa
Hand washing is the correct method for cleaning a vehicle wrap in South Africa. It takes more time than an automatic wash — but it is the only method that cleans the wrap effectively without risking damage.
What you need:
- Two clean buckets — one for the wash solution, one for rinsing the mitt
- A clean microfibre wash mitt — not a sponge, which traps grit and scratches the vinyl surface

The process:
Fill one bucket with clean water and a small amount of pH-neutral shampoo. Fill the second with clean water only — this is for rinsing the wash mitt between panels to avoid dragging grit across the vinyl surface.
Work from the top of the vehicle downward. The roof, bonnet, and upper panels carry the least contamination — cleaning these first means you are working with a clean mitt before getting to the dirtier lower panels and sills.
Use the mitt in straight lines — not circular motions. Circular washing on vinyl creates swirl marks in the surface coating that become visible in direct sunlight.
Rinse the mitt in the clean water bucket after each panel. Wring it out before returning to the wash solution. This removes the grit lifted from each panel before it goes back onto the vinyl surface.
After washing, rinse the vehicle thoroughly with low-pressure water — a garden hose at normal household pressure is fine. Avoid directing water at wrap edges under pressure.
Dry with a clean microfibre cloth using light blotting pressure — not rubbing. Air drying leaves water spots on vinyl in South Africa's hard water areas, particularly in Gauteng.
